Poem: A New Year Started Somewhere

We drove into night
Snowing
Like stars
We glider down country roads
In the darkness
Running errand
Racing against year’s end
Little princess
In the back
Face glowing
Your eyes shining
Your mouth smiling

When the clock struck 7
You pulled over
I tried to say something foolish
Words fumbled in my mouth
As you stopped them
With your kiss

I remembered
I rediscovered
I asked nothing
I surrendered
My heart raced
The fireworks exploded
The world disappeared
The snow fell, cold
While we melted

A new year started somewhere
Everything ahead
I look forward
As we drive again
